Shipwreck Cowhide · Heavy Profile

Chunky Engineer Boots | 29 cm Shaft, 5 cm Heel

WL-EG11 uses 2.2–2.4 mm Shipwreck hand-embossed cowhide with a tall 29 cm shaft and 5 cm heel. Goodyear welt construction and a Vibram Mini Lug 430 sole create the heaviest stance in this textured-leather pair, clearly separating it from the lower WL-EG9.

🥾

29 cm Shaft, 5 cm Heel

Our tallest shaft on our highest stacked heel. This is the engineer boot that shows above the hem instead of hiding under it.

Vibram MINI LUG 430 Sole

A real lug tread, not a decorative one — deeper bite on loose ground and a visibly thicker sole edge under the welt.

🟤

2.2–2.4 mm Shipwreck Leather

Hand-embossed and mist-waxed full-grain cowhide. At this thickness the shaft holds its own shape rather than slumping.

🧵

Goodyear Welt Construction

The welt is stitched rather than glued — which is what makes a lug tread this deep worth replacing instead of throwing away.

Fit, Size & Styling Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing — boot size 35 matches sneaker size 36, and the offset holds across the range. This product uses a standard last and does not include E or EE width options. Regular sizes run EU 35–44, with Custom Size EU available from EU 45–47. Shipwreck Leather is a recreated finish inspired by salvaged-hide lore, not leather recovered from a wreck. These boots are not certified protective motorcycle, tactical, or safety footwear.

Three Ways to Style WL-EG11

29 cm lug-sole engineer boots create a heavier line than the lower WL-EG9. These 5 cm heel engineer boots work best with straight or relaxed denim, substantial outerwear and other pieces that can match the visual weight.

The brown colorway balances a heavier coat better than black does — it keeps the outfit from going flat.

Why This Boot Works

Maximum Shaft, Maximum Sole, Nothing Slimmed Down

Built for people who want the engineer boot to be obvious — taller, heavier, and treaded rather than smoothed off.

🦵

29 cm — Our Tallest Shaft

Two centimetres taller than our mid-shaft engineer boots, which is the difference between a boot that ends at the ankle bone and one that reaches the calf.

📐

5 cm Stacked Heel

The higher stack pitches the foot forward slightly and lifts the whole sole edge, which is where most of the visual weight comes from.

Vibram MINI LUG 430

A functional lug tread with real depth — grip on loose or wet ground, and a thicker, more assertive sole edge than a flat rubber sole.

🟤

2.2–2.4 mm Hide

Thickness does structural work here. Below about 2 mm a 29 cm shaft starts to slump; at this weight it stands where you leave it.

🔗

Twin Buckle Straps

An ankle strap and an upper strap pull the shaft in at two points, which matters more the taller the shaft gets.

🧵

Goodyear Welt Build

Goodyear welt construction supports long-term structure, durability, and future resoling — worth more on a boot with a tread that will actually wear down.

Leather

Shipwreck Leather — 2.2–2.4 mm Hand-Embossed Cowhide

A full-grain cowhide developed with an established tannery: the grain is pressed in by hand, then the surface is sealed under a fine mist of wax, recreating the uneven, timeworn character of hides once salvaged from sunken ships. On a shaft this tall the thickness is doing structural work, not just adding hand-feel — it is what keeps 29 cm of leather standing.

Outsole

Italy VIBRAM® MINI LUG 430 Rubber Sole

Vibram has been compounding rubber outsoles in Italy since 1937. The MINI LUG 430 carries a compact but genuinely deep lug pattern across the forepart and heel — it bites on loose and wet ground, and it gives the boot a visibly thicker sole edge beneath the welt. Origin: Italy.

Insole & Footbed

Italy 3S SELI® Vegetable Tanned Cowhide with 2 mm Leather Half Footbed

Conceria 3S SELI has tanned in Tuscany since 1929 using chestnut, mimosa and oak bark rather than chrome. Vegetable tanned leather is stiffer at first and then takes a permanent impression of the foot — on a heavier boot that break-in period is longer, and the result lasts accordingly. A 2 mm Italian vegetable tanned half footbed sits over it at heel and arch. Origin: Tuscany, Italy.

Natural wood chip midsole filling reference for chunky leather boots
Midsole

Natural Wood-Chip Midsole Filling

The cavity between outsole and insole is packed with 2 mm of natural wood chips instead of being left hollow or filled with cork board. It compresses unevenly — more where you bear weight, less where you do not — so the bed under your foot ends up shaped by how you actually walk.

Full grain calfskin half lining reference for chunky leather boots
Lining

Full-Grain Calfskin Half Lining

Calfskin lines the foot and lower shaft; the upper shaft is left unlined. On a 29 cm boot that matters — a fully lined shaft this tall gets hot and stiff, while a half lining keeps the top section flexible enough to move with the calf.

Shaping

Germany RHENOFLEX® 3155/3175 Forefoot and Heel Stiffeners

RHENOFLEX has supplied shoe reinforcement materials from Germany since 1952. The 3155/3175 stiffeners hold the toe box and heel counter in shape over years of wear — on a heavy boot with a 5 cm stacked heel, a collapsed heel counter is the first thing that ruins the line. Origin: Germany.

UK COATS® Brio™ Series Professional Leather Sewing Thread

COATS has been making thread in the UK since 1755. The Brio™ Series is built for leather work, where the thread has to survive being pulled through a 2.2 mm hide without abrading — the welt seam on a boot like this is under more tension than on a lighter shoe. Origin: United Kingdom.

Craftsmanship

Goodyear Welt Construction

The welt is stitched to a rib on the insole, and the outsole is stitched to the welt — so the sole can be removed and replaced without touching the upper. On a boot with a lug tread that will genuinely wear down, that is the difference between resoling once and buying twice.

Component brands describe the materials used in these boots. They do not imply certification, safety rating, or protective performance.

Leather & Details

Why a Tall Boot Needs a Thick Hide

Shaft height and leather weight are the same problem. A 29 cm shaft in thin leather concertinas at the ankle within a month; the same height in a 2.2–2.4 mm hand-embossed hide holds a clean line for years. That is the reason this boot uses the thickness it does — the hand-pressed grain and mist-wax finish are what you see, but the substance is what makes the silhouette work.
🟤

Hand-Embossed, Mist-Waxed

The grain is pressed in by hand rather than rolled on evenly, then sealed under a wax mist. Turn the boot in the light and the tone shifts — that irregularity is the entire point of the finish.

🦵

29 cm of Standing Shaft

The two buckle straps pull the shaft in at ankle and calf, and the leather weight does the rest. Tucked or untucked, the top edge stays where you set it.

5 cm Stack Over a Lug Tread

A stacked heel this high combined with a real Vibram lug gives the boot its sole edge — the thick, layered band that reads as weight before you even pick it up.

Shipwreck Leather is a recreated finish inspired by the lore of hides salvaged from sunken ships — it is not leather recovered from a wreck. Tonal variation, uneven grain depth, and darkening at the flex points are the intended character of the finish rather than defects. These boots are designed for heritage engineer styling and rugged everyday wear, not as certified protective footwear.

Fit & Sizing

Fit and Size Guidance for WL-EG11

Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing across the range: boot size 35 matches sneaker size 36, boot 36 matches sneaker 37, and so on through boot 44, which matches sneaker 45. Take one size down from your usual sneaker size, then confirm against measured foot length. These boots use a standard last with no E or EE width options.
📏

One Full Size Larger Than Sneakers

Boot 35 = sneaker 36, boot 36 = sneaker 37, and the same one-size offset holds all the way to boot 44 = sneaker 45. Order one size below your usual sneaker size.

🦵

A Tall Shaft Takes Effort to Enter

At 29 cm in a 2.2–2.4 mm hide, the shaft is stiff out of the box and the instep has to clear on the way in. This eases considerably after the first few wears — it is not a sizing problem.

Try-On Advice
Try indoors on a clean surface before outdoor wear
Shipwreck cowhide lug boots develop visual depth through the recreated hand-embossed finish. WL-EG11 combines that surface with a 29 cm shaft, 5 cm heel and Vibram Mini Lug 430 outsole; the leather is not recovered from a shipwreck.

The Story

Every Extra Centimetre Costs Something

Making an engineer boot taller is easy. Making a taller one that still looks right two years later is not. Height adds leverage: a 29 cm shaft folds at the ankle unless the hide is heavy enough to resist it, and a 5 cm stacked heel puts more load through the welt than a flat sole ever does. So the specification follows the silhouette rather than the other way round — a 2.2–2.4 mm hide instead of a supple one, two buckle straps instead of one, a German-made heel counter to stop the back collapsing, and a Goodyear welt so the lug tread can be replaced when it finally wears through. The look is the loudest boot we make. The build is what lets it stay that way.

Where WL-EG11 Fits Best

This is not a subtle boot and it does not reward being treated like one. It works where the rest of the outfit has some weight to it — heavy denim, real outerwear, cold weather, rough ground.

Care & FAQ

Care, Fit, and Everyday Wear Guide

Product-specific answers about materials, construction, fit, sizing, care and intended use.

Textured Waxed Leather Care

🧽

Brush Into the Grain

A horsehair brush worked in small circles reaches the low points of the embossed grain. A flat wipe skims over them and leaves dust behind.

🦵

Store the Shaft Upright

A 29 cm shaft left lying down will crease permanently at the ankle. Stand the boots up, ideally with shapers or rolled paper inside the shaft.

🧴

Condition Sparingly

Thin coats, only when the hide feels dry. Heavy conditioning fills the embossed grain, softens the leather, and a softer 29 cm shaft is exactly what you do not want.

💧

Avoid Heavy Moisture

These boots are not waterproof. If they get damp, dry them naturally at room temperature away from direct heat, then brush the grain back up.

Fit, Care and Product FAQ · WL-EG11

What distinguishes WL-EG11 from the other Hector Maden models?
WL-EG11 is the taller and heavier Shipwreck-finish model. Compared with WL-EG9, it adds 2 cm of shaft height, raises the heel to 5 cm and changes from the slim Vibram 705 setup to a Mini Lug 430 sole.
How should I choose my size?
Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing. Boot 35 matches sneaker 36, boot 36 matches sneaker 37, and the same offset holds up to boot 44, which matches sneaker 45. Order one size below your usual sneaker size, then confirm against your measured foot length.
What sizes are available?
Regular sizes are available from EU 35–44. Custom Size EU is available from EU 45–47.
Do these boots have E or EE width options?
No. This product uses a standard last and does not include E or EE width options, so measured foot length is the most reliable sizing reference.
How is this different from your other engineer boots?
Size and sole. At 29 cm this is our tallest shaft, on a 5 cm stacked heel, over a Vibram MINI LUG 430 with a genuine lug tread. Our mid-shaft engineer boots sit around 27 cm on a lower heel with a slimmer sole edge. If you want the boot to be visible in the outfit, this is the one.
What is Shipwreck Leather? Is it really from a shipwreck?
No — and we want to be plain about that. It is a full-grain cowhide developed with an established tannery, embossed by hand and sealed with a mist-wax finish to recreate the uneven, timeworn character of the legendary hides once salvaged from sunken ships. The look is recreated on purpose; the hide is new.
Why does the leather thickness matter?
Because of the shaft height. At 29 cm, a thin or supple hide folds at the ankle within weeks and never recovers. A 2.2–2.4 mm hide has enough body to hold the shaft standing, which is why this boot uses a heavier leather than a low-cut one would need.
Will these boots feel stiff at first?
Yes, noticeably. A tall shaft in a heavy hide is stiff out of the box and the instep has to clear on the way in. It eases considerably over the first few wears. Stiffness on day one is normal here and is not a sign the size is wrong.
What colors are available?
These boots are offered in black and brown. Black reads heaviest and most graphic; brown shows the hand-embossed grain and wax depth more clearly, and balances heavy outerwear better.
How tall is the shaft, and how high is the heel?
The shaft is 29 cm — our tallest — and the heel is a 5 cm stack. Together they are what give the boot its weight in an outfit.
Can these boots be resoled?
Yes, that is part of the reasoning behind the construction. Goodyear welt lets the outsole be removed and replaced without disturbing the upper, which matters more here than on a smooth-soled boot — a real lug tread does eventually wear down.
Are these certified protective motorcycle or safety boots?
No. These boots are designed for heritage engineer styling and rugged everyday wear. They carry no protective certification, have no steel toe, and are not certified motorcycle, tactical, or safety footwear.
These chunky leather boots are built for heritage styling and rugged everyday wear. Shipwreck Leather is a recreated finish inspired by salvaged-hide lore, not leather recovered from a wreck. They are not certified protective footwear and are not waterproof.
