De-Waxed HAAS · Far Less Bloom

De-Waxed Calfskin Engineer Boots | Black, 29 cm Shaft

WL-EG14 uses 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS full-aniline calfskin with the surface wax removed. The finish shows clearer color and far less bloom than WL-EG12, while retaining a 29 cm shaft, 5 cm heel, Goodyear welt and Vibram Mini Lug 430 sole.

🖤

De-Waxed Finish

The surface wax haze is removed, so the colour and grain of the calfskin read directly. Blacks look black rather than charcoal.

📐

2.0–2.2 mm HAAS Calfskin

Roughly double the usual 1.0–1.4 mm. Same hide as our standard HAAS boot — only the surface treatment differs.

Vibram MINI LUG 430

A compact but genuinely deep lug across forepart and heel, on a 5 cm stacked heel.

🧵

Goodyear Welt Construction

Stitched, not glued — the outsole can be replaced without disturbing the upper.

Fit, Size & Which Finish to Choose Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing — boot size 35 matches sneaker size 36, and the offset holds across the range. Standard last, no E or EE width options. Regular sizes EU 35–44, Custom Size EU 45–47. If you want the aged, waxy look that develops a white bloom in storage, choose our standard HAAS finish instead; this pair is the de-waxed version, made to stay clear. These boots are not certified protective motorcycle, tactical, or safety footwear.

Three Ways to Style WL-EG14

Low-bloom engineer boots show the leather color more clearly than a wax-retained finish, although occasional haze can still appear after storage. These full-aniline black boots work with dark denim and leather outerwear, while brown colorways make the grain and burnish more visible.

Against Tailoring

This is the pair in the range that goes furthest towards dressed — clear black calf next to wool reads deliberate, not rugged.

The Two Browns

Without the wax veil, dark brown reads richer and light brown reads warmer than the standard finish.

Why This Boot Works

What You See When the Wax Comes Off

The same 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS calfskin as our standard boot, finished without the surface wax — clearer colour, visible grain, and far less bloom to manage.

🖤

Colour Without a Veil

A wax haze mutes whatever is under it. Take it off and black is properly black, and the two browns gain depth rather than looking dusty.

❄️

Far Less Bloom

The white haze that surfaces on a waxed boot after storage is much less pronounced here. If you would rather not wipe your boots before wearing them, this is the finish to pick.

📐

2.0–2.2 mm Calfskin

Roughly double the usual 1.0–1.4 mm. It resists distortion, outlasts thin calf considerably, and largely avoids loose grain.

🫗

Full Aniline, Combination-Tanned

Vegetable tannage for durability, chrome for suppleness, and no pigment layer over the top — so the pores and grain of the hide stay visible.

Vibram MINI LUG 430

Real lug depth for grip, kept compact so it does not turn a calfskin boot into a hiking boot. On a 5 cm stacked heel.

🧵

Goodyear Welt, 29 cm Shaft

A stitched welt means the sole is the replaceable part. On an upper this expensive, that is the whole point.

Leather

France HAAS® SUPORTLO® PRO Calfskin — De-Waxed, 2.0–2.2 mm

The hide is unchanged from our standard HAAS boot — a calfskin tanned in Alsace by a house working there since 1842, whose SUPORTLO® has been its signature since the 1920s. Combination tannage, full-aniline dye, fish-oil fatliquoring, 2.0–2.2 mm where calfskin normally runs 1.0–1.4 mm. Everything on this page turns on the final step instead: whether the surface wax stays or goes. Here it goes. Origin: Alsace, France.

Outsole

Italy VIBRAM® MINI LUG 430 Rubber Sole

Vibram has compounded outsole rubber in Italy since 1937. The MINI LUG 430 was picked for proportion as much as grip — deep enough in the lug to be functional, compact enough that it does not visually overpower a smooth calfskin upper. Origin: Italy.

3S SELI Tuscan vegetable tanned insole and leather half footbed in black engineer boots
Insole & Footbed

Italy 3S SELI® Vegetable Tanned Cowhide with 2 mm Leather Half Footbed

Nothing about this part is visible, which is exactly why it gets skipped elsewhere. A natural vegetable tanned cowhide insole — from a Tuscan house using chestnut, mimosa and oak bark since 1929 — is stiff for the first month and then permanently holds the shape of the foot above it. Synthetic boards never do that; they stay the shape they were stamped. A 2 mm Italian vegetable tanned half footbed lies over it. Origin: Tuscany, Italy.

Midsole

Natural Wood-Chip Midsole Filling

2 mm of natural wood chips pack the void between outsole and insole. They settle unevenly under load, which is the point — the bed underfoot ends up shaped by your gait rather than arriving pre-formed.

Full grain calfskin half lining reference for black engineer boots
Lining

Full-Grain Calfskin Half Lining

Calfskin through the foot and lower shaft, unlined above. On a 29 cm boot a full lining adds heat and stiffness exactly where the shaft needs to move with the calf, so leaving the top open is a decision rather than an omission.

Shaping

Germany RHENOFLEX® 3155/3175 Forefoot and Heel Stiffeners

German reinforcement materials, made by RHENOFLEX since 1952. They hold the toe box round and the heel counter upright — and on a smooth black calfskin boot, where every distortion shows, that structure is more visible than it would be on a textured hide. Origin: Germany.

UK COATS Brio thread used for stitching black calfskin engineer boots
Thread

UK COATS® Brio™ Thread

On a smooth black upper the stitching is not hidden by texture, so it has to remain clean and consistent. Brio™ Series thread from COATS® is specified for leather footwear because it can be drawn repeatedly through the substantial 2.0–2.2 mm calfskin while resisting abrasion and fraying. Thread origin: United Kingdom.

Goodyear welt construction and outsole stitching on black engineer boots
Construction

Goodyear Welt Construction

The welt is attached to a rib on the insole, and the outsole is then stitched to the welt. This construction allows a qualified cobbler to replace a worn outsole without dismantling the calfskin upper, provided the upper and welt remain in serviceable condition.

Component brands describe the materials used in these boots. They do not imply certification, safety rating, or protective performance.

Leather & Details

Black Calfskin Hides Nothing

A waxed matte finish is forgiving — it softens edges, evens out the grain, and covers small inconsistencies. Take the wax off a black hide and none of that is available any more: every line of grain, every stitch, and every millimetre of the welt stack is on show. That is only worth doing if the hide underneath can carry it, which is the reason this finish sits on 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS calfskin rather than something thinner.
🖤

De-Waxed, Full Aniline

No wax film and no pigment layer. The colour sits in the hide rather than on it, so the pores and grain stay legible and the black keeps its depth in daylight rather than flattening out.

❄️

Far Less Bloom to Manage

Waxed finishes push a white haze to the surface as temperature and humidity shift — normal, but it needs wiping before wear. With the surface wax removed, this version shows much less of it.

🔗

29 cm Shaft, 5 cm Stack, Twin Buckles

The tallest, heaviest proportions we build, in the least forgiving surface we offer. The 2.0–2.2 mm hide is what keeps that shaft standing cleanly rather than creasing at the ankle.

De-waxed refers to the surface finish, not to the hide's internal oils — the leather is still fish-oil fatliquored and will darken and burnish at the flex points with wear. Some bloom may still appear after long storage, though noticeably less than on the standard waxed finish. If you prefer the aged, matte, actively blooming look, choose our standard HAAS finish instead. These boots are designed for heritage engineer styling and rugged everyday wear, not as certified protective footwear.

Fit & Sizing

Fit and Size Guidance for WL-EG14

Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing across the range: boot size 35 matches sneaker size 36, boot 36 matches sneaker 37, and so on through boot 44, which matches sneaker 45. Take one size down from your usual sneaker size, then confirm against measured foot length. These boots use a standard last with no E or EE width options.
📏

One Full Size Larger Than Sneakers

Boot 35 = sneaker 36, boot 36 = sneaker 37, and the same one-size offset holds all the way to boot 44 = sneaker 45. Order one size below your usual sneaker size.

🦵

Tall Shaft, Firm From New

At 29 cm in a 2.0–2.2 mm hide the shaft is stiff out of the box and the instep has to clear on the way in. Heavy calfskin softens gradually — week four feels different from day one.

Please try your boots indoors on a clean surface before outdoor wear. Smooth black calfskin shows scuffs more readily than a waxed or textured finish, so the first outing is worth choosing carefully. Keep the original labels, box, and packaging until you are sure the fit works for you. Most pairs are custom-made, and sizing, color, or production details may be confirmed by email after purchase.

Vibram 430 calfskin boots combine a compact lug pattern with a tall shaft and substantial heel. On WL-EG14, the de-waxed HAAS upper provides clearer color and far less bloom; it should never be described as completely bloom-free.

The Story

Two Finishes, One Hide, Opposite Intentions

Wax on a boot upper does a specific job: it softens the surface optically, evens out the grain, and starts the leather looking older than it is. Plenty of people want exactly that — it is why the standard finish exists and why its white bloom is treated as a feature rather than a fault. This pair is the other answer to the same question. Same HAAS calfskin, same 2.0–2.2 mm, same tannage and aniline dye — but the surface wax comes off at the end. What you get is a boot that starts clear and earns its patina rather than arriving with one, and that needs wiping before wear far less often. Neither is better. They are for different people, and it is worth knowing which one you are.

Where WL-EG14 Fits Best

Clear black smooth calfskin is the most adaptable surface in the range. It reads rugged with denim and deliberate with wool, and unlike a waxed or napped finish it needs almost nothing from you before you put it on.

Care & FAQ

Care, Finish, and Sizing Guide

Product-specific answers about materials, construction, fit, sizing, care and intended use.

De-Waxed Calfskin Care

🧽

Brush, Then Wipe

A horsehair brush for dust, then a dry cloth. Aniline calf has no pigment layer to hide behind, so gentle and frequent beats hard and occasional.

🖤

Polish Only if You Want Shine

A neutral or matching cream polish will build gloss on a de-waxed surface much faster than on a waxed one. Start with far less than you think you need.

🧴

Condition Rarely

The hide is still fish-oil fatliquored. Add a leather-safe conditioner only when it genuinely feels dry — over-conditioning aniline calf darkens it unevenly and permanently.

💧

Not Waterproof

Removing the surface wax also removes some water resistance. Avoid soaking; if the boots get wet, dry them naturally at room temperature away from direct heat.

Fit, Care and Product FAQ · WL-EG14

What distinguishes WL-EG14 from the other Hector Maden models?
WL-EG14 removes the surface wax found on WL-EG12. That produces clearer color and far less bloom, but it does not guarantee that bloom can never occur because the leather remains internally fatliquored.
Will these boots still develop the white bloom?
Much less than the waxed finish, but we would not promise never. De-waxed refers to the surface treatment; the hide is still fish-oil fatliquored internally, so after a long spell in a box some haze can still surface. A wipe with a soft cloth clears it.
How should I choose my size?
Boot sizing runs one full size larger than sneaker sizing. Boot 35 matches sneaker 36, boot 36 matches sneaker 37, and the same offset holds up to boot 44, which matches sneaker 45. Order one size below your usual sneaker size, then confirm against your measured foot length.
What sizes are available?
Regular sizes are available from EU 35–44. Custom Size EU is available from EU 45–47.
Do these boots have E or EE width options?
No. This product uses a standard last and does not include E or EE width options, so measured foot length is the most reliable sizing reference.
Does black show scuffs more than your other finishes?
Yes. A smooth de-waxed surface reports marks that a waxed matte or a napped suede would absorb into their texture. Most scuffs on aniline calf brush out or respond to a little cream polish, but if you want a boot that hides wear, a waxed or roughout finish suits better.
Why does 2.0–2.2 mm matter?
Calfskin is normally finished at 1.0–1.4 mm. At roughly double that thickness the boot distorts less in wear, service life is considerably longer, and the hide is far less prone to loose grain — the wrinkling and separation of the grain layer that thin calfskin develops with age. On a 29 cm shaft it is also what keeps the boot standing rather than folding at the ankle.
What do combination tannage and full aniline mean?
Combination tannage means the hide is tanned with both vegetable and chrome agents, carrying the durability of the first and the flexibility of the second. Full aniline means it is dyed without a covering pigment layer — the colour is in the leather rather than on it, so the natural pores and grain remain visible.
What colors are available?
Black, dark brown and light brown. Black is the clearest expression of the de-waxed finish; dark brown gains depth without the wax veil; light brown reads warmest.
How tall is the shaft, and how high is the heel?
The shaft is 29 cm and the heel is a 5 cm stack — the tallest and heaviest proportions in our engineer range.
Can these boots be resoled?
Yes. Goodyear welt construction lets the outsole be removed and replaced without disturbing the upper, which is the reasoning behind putting a hide this expensive on a replaceable sole.
Are these certified protective motorcycle or safety boots?
No. These boots are designed for heritage engineer styling and rugged everyday wear. They carry no protective certification, have no steel toe, and are not certified motorcycle, tactical, or safety footwear.
These black engineer boots use a de-waxed surface finish on HAAS calfskin. Darkening and burnishing at the flex points are expected; bloom is far less pronounced than on the waxed finish but not impossible. They are not certified protective footwear and are not waterproof.
