De-Waxed HAAS · Far Less Bloom
WL-EG14 uses 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS full-aniline calfskin with the surface wax removed. The finish shows clearer color and far less bloom than WL-EG12, while retaining a 29 cm shaft, 5 cm heel, Goodyear welt and Vibram Mini Lug 430 sole.
The surface wax haze is removed, so the colour and grain of the calfskin read directly. Blacks look black rather than charcoal.
Roughly double the usual 1.0–1.4 mm. Same hide as our standard HAAS boot — only the surface treatment differs.

Style Preview
Low-bloom engineer boots show the leather color more clearly than a wax-retained finish, although occasional haze can still appear after storage. These full-aniline black boots work with dark denim and leather outerwear, while brown colorways make the grain and burnish more visible.

Why This Boot Works
The same 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS calfskin as our standard boot, finished without the surface wax — clearer colour, visible grain, and far less bloom to manage.
A wax haze mutes whatever is under it. Take it off and black is properly black, and the two browns gain depth rather than looking dusty.
The white haze that surfaces on a waxed boot after storage is much less pronounced here. If you would rather not wipe your boots before wearing them, this is the finish to pick.
Roughly double the usual 1.0–1.4 mm. It resists distortion, outlasts thin calf considerably, and largely avoids loose grain.
Vegetable tannage for durability, chrome for suppleness, and no pigment layer over the top — so the pores and grain of the hide stay visible.
Real lug depth for grip, kept compact so it does not turn a calfskin boot into a hiking boot. On a 5 cm stacked heel.
A stitched welt means the sole is the replaceable part. On an upper this expensive, that is the whole point.

The hide is unchanged from our standard HAAS boot — a calfskin tanned in Alsace by a house working there since 1842, whose SUPORTLO® has been its signature since the 1920s. Combination tannage, full-aniline dye, fish-oil fatliquoring, 2.0–2.2 mm where calfskin normally runs 1.0–1.4 mm. Everything on this page turns on the final step instead: whether the surface wax stays or goes. Here it goes. Origin: Alsace, France.
Vibram has compounded outsole rubber in Italy since 1937. The MINI LUG 430 was picked for proportion as much as grip — deep enough in the lug to be functional, compact enough that it does not visually overpower a smooth calfskin upper. Origin: Italy.
Nothing about this part is visible, which is exactly why it gets skipped elsewhere. A natural vegetable tanned cowhide insole — from a Tuscan house using chestnut, mimosa and oak bark since 1929 — is stiff for the first month and then permanently holds the shape of the foot above it. Synthetic boards never do that; they stay the shape they were stamped. A 2 mm Italian vegetable tanned half footbed lies over it. Origin: Tuscany, Italy.
2 mm of natural wood chips pack the void between outsole and insole. They settle unevenly under load, which is the point — the bed underfoot ends up shaped by your gait rather than arriving pre-formed.
Calfskin through the foot and lower shaft, unlined above. On a 29 cm boot a full lining adds heat and stiffness exactly where the shaft needs to move with the calf, so leaving the top open is a decision rather than an omission.
German reinforcement materials, made by RHENOFLEX since 1952. They hold the toe box round and the heel counter upright — and on a smooth black calfskin boot, where every distortion shows, that structure is more visible than it would be on a textured hide. Origin: Germany.
On a smooth black upper the stitching is not hidden by texture, so it has to remain clean and consistent. Brio™ Series thread from COATS® is specified for leather footwear because it can be drawn repeatedly through the substantial 2.0–2.2 mm calfskin while resisting abrasion and fraying. The welt is attached to a rib on the insole, and the outsole is then stitched to the welt. This construction allows a qualified cobbler to replace a worn outsole without dismantling the calfskin upper, provided the upper and welt remain in serviceable condition.
Leather & Details
No wax film and no pigment layer. The colour sits in the hide rather than on it, so the pores and grain stay legible and the black keeps its depth in daylight rather than flattening out.
Waxed finishes push a white haze to the surface as temperature and humidity shift — normal, but it needs wiping before wear. With the surface wax removed, this version shows much less of it.
The tallest, heaviest proportions we build, in the least forgiving surface we offer. The 2.0–2.2 mm hide is what keeps that shaft standing cleanly rather than creasing at the ankle.
Fit & Sizing
Boot 35 = sneaker 36, boot 36 = sneaker 37, and the same one-size offset holds all the way to boot 44 = sneaker 45. Order one size below your usual sneaker size.
At 29 cm in a 2.0–2.2 mm hide the shaft is stiff out of the box and the instep has to clear on the way in. Heavy calfskin softens gradually — week four feels different from day one.

Care & FAQ
A horsehair brush for dust, then a dry cloth. Aniline calf has no pigment layer to hide behind, so gentle and frequent beats hard and occasional.
A neutral or matching cream polish will build gloss on a de-waxed surface much faster than on a waxed one. Start with far less than you think you need.
The hide is still fish-oil fatliquored. Add a leather-safe conditioner only when it genuinely feels dry — over-conditioning aniline calf darkens it unevenly and permanently.
Removing the surface wax also removes some water resistance. Avoid soaking; if the boots get wet, dry them naturally at room temperature away from direct heat.
