WL-EG12 uses 2.0–2.2 mm HAAS SUPORTLO PRO full-aniline calfskin with its waxed surface retained. A 29 cm shaft, 5 cm heel, Goodyear welt and Vibram Mini Lug 430 sole give the leather a tall, substantial platform for developing bloom, creasing and burnish with wear.

Calfskin usually runs 1.0–1.4 mm. At this weight the boot distorts less in wear, lasts considerably longer, and is far less prone to loose grain.

Why Thickness Is the Whole Argument

Calfskin is prized for its fine, tight grain — but it is normally taken to 1.0–1.4 mm, which is thin enough that a boot upper starts working against it. HAAS finishes SUPORTLO® at 2.0–2.2 mm. That single decision is what makes calfskin viable on a 29 cm engineer shaft, and it is what the rest of this boot is built around.

Three Things Thickness Buys

Less distortion in wear, so the boot keeps its shape. A service life well beyond calfskin under 1.5 mm. And far less tendency toward loose grain — the wrinkling and separation of the grain layer that thin calf develops with age.

This is bloom — the natural oils and waxes in a heavily fatliquored hide migrating outward as temperature and humidity change. It indicates a well-fed leather rather than a fault, it disappears with regular wear, and it will return if the boots sit unworn. Wipe it away with a soft cloth, or warm the surface with a hairdryer for a minute or two. These boots are designed for heritage engineer styling and rugged everyday wear, not as certified protective footwear.

These thick full-grain leather boots retain the surface wax that distinguishes WL-EG12 from the de-waxed WL-EG14. The 29 cm shaft, 5 cm heel and Vibram Mini Lug 430 outsole are otherwise closely related.

The Story

Calfskin Is Usually the Wrong Leather for This Boot

Calfskin has the finest grain of any common hide, which is why dress shoemakers reach for it. It is also normally split to 1.0–1.4 mm, and at that weight it has no business on an engineer boot: the shaft folds, the grain goes loose within a couple of years, and the whole thing starts looking tired long before the sole wears out. HAAS finishing SUPORTLO® at 2.0–2.2 mm changes the arithmetic — you get calf grain with the substance of a work hide. From there we asked for two changes: more oil and wax, so it survives being worn rather than displayed, and a tea-core dye instead of a through-dye, so the places that wear hardest turn warmer rather than just turning shabby. The result is the boot in our range that most rewards being worn badly.

White Haze Is Bloom, Not Mould

Oils and waxes migrating out of a well-fed hide as temperature and humidity change. Wipe with a soft cloth, or warm the surface with a hairdryer for a minute or two. It returns if the boots sit unworn — that is normal.

Brush, Then Wipe

A horsehair brush for dust, then a dry cloth. Aniline leather has no pigment layer to hide behind, so it is worth doing this often and gently rather than rarely and hard.

Condition Rarely

The PRO specification already carries a high oil and wax content. Add a leather-safe conditioner only when the hide genuinely feels dry — over-conditioning aniline calf darkens it unevenly and permanently.

Water-Resistant, Not Waterproof

The extra oil and wax help considerably, but these are not waterproof boots. If they get wet, dry them naturally at room temperature away from direct heat.

What distinguishes WL-EG12 from the other Hector Maden models?
WL-EG12 keeps the HAAS surface wax, so bloom and a muted finish are expected characteristics. WL-EG14 removes that surface wax for clearer color and far less bloom, while WL-EG13 changes the proportions to a lower heel and made-to-order focus.
There is a white haze on my boots. Is something wrong?
No. That is bloom — the natural oils and waxes inside a heavily fatliquored hide migrating to the surface as temperature and humidity change. It is evidence that the leather is well fed, not a defect, and it is not mould. It disappears with regular wear and returns if the boots sit unworn for a while. To clear it quickly, wipe with a soft cloth or warm the surface with a hairdryer for one to two minutes.

What is HAAS SUPORTLO® PRO, and how is it different from standard Suportlo?
SUPORTLO® is the signature calfskin of Tanneries HAAS in Alsace, France, in production since the 1920s. PRO is the specification we asked HAAS for, with two changes: a higher oil and wax content, which makes the leather easier to maintain and noticeably more water-resistant; and a tea-core dye in place of the standard through-dye, so a lighter core is revealed as the boot wears.

What does the tea-core dye do over time?
